A GOVERNMENT AGAINST THE ENVIRONMENT

After two and a half years of destroying Brazil, Minister Ricardo Salles fell on June 23, pressured by two investigations in the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Salles is accused of favoring loggers and was the subject of a search and seizure in May.
It leaves as a legacy two years of high deforestation, two successive records of fires in the Amazon, 26% of the Pantanal charred and the country's international image in the mud. He was a symptom and not a disease. It only efficiently fulfilled Jair Bolsonaro's stated objective of closing down the Ministry of the Environment in practice.
The environmental policy of the current regime will not change with the change of its executor – his successor, Joaquim Pereira Leite, was one of Salles' main advisers. His affinity with the former minister and with the agenda of Jair Bolsonaro indicate that the herdsman has changed, but the herd remains the same.
As long as Bolsonaro is in office, with Arthur Lira to pass setbacks in Congress, the environment and indigenous peoples will not have a day of peace. We will continue to be an international pariah and a planetary climate risk.
